Antivirus Performance Comparison

Antivirus Performance Comparison

It’s important to know how many computer resources the antivirus program will consume. The most effective programs have only a minimal impact on system performance while still providing excellent security against viruses and malware.

Most antivirus software providers publish extensive tests in PDF format. The reports offer a brief overview of the protection, performance, and usability of each suite. They also include detailed graphs and charts that display the results of specific testing elements. The percentage of malware that is real-world and exposures to reference sets that the program blocks, neutralizes or compromises, as well the number of false positives detections of malicious programs, are key figures to watch out for.

In the tests conducted by AV-Comparatives in June 2023, Avast Free Antivirus for Mac was the most successful in achieving the highest percentage of pass rates in blocking Mac malware and PUAs (potentially unwanted applications) and the second highest score for Windows virus detection. It also scored high in the passive, full-scan and quick-scan categories.

Bitdefender Total Security was the least intrusive paid program, followed by Kaspersky Total Security, and ESET Security Cloud Free. However it was also the most slow in the full scan and quick-scan categories. Its light background impact may be due to the fact that the program does not run by default on Windows 10 and 11, like its competitors do.

Intego X10 had the lowest overall background and full-scan system impact, yet it managed to catch every single piece of malware tested. It’s a rare company that is solely focused on Macs and makes it a valuable addition to any security arsenal.
